Chapter Sixteen

Elise gave Mary a nod. “I’d better take her to see Poppa Rob or we’ll never hear the end of it.”

Mary smiled shyly. “Yes, she’s been wriggling around in her seat for the last five minutes. I wonder if Jill will show up. It will be nice to see her again.”

You’re spot on the mark there, Mary. Elise walked with Lily down the aisle of the emptying bus. She was first to step down the five steps landing on the pavement before Mary carefully guided an excited Lily down the steps. Once Lily’s feet touched the ground, she was off running toward the large man conversing with Carol Van Cliff.

Elise watched fascinated as her niece flung her arms around the man. He immediately picked her up with a huge grin on his face. He appeared as happy to see Lily as the little girl was to see him.

“Well, if it isn’t poppet. How’s my little poppet today?”

Elise was sure Jill’s father would crush Lily when he enveloped her in a massive hug with arms like two giant vices. Then, she heard Lily chuckle and squeal in happiness.

“Don’t do that, Poppa Rob, it tickles.”

Several people were looking at the spectacle and then furtively at Elise. She’d encountered their gazes but didn’t care what they thought for they were unimportant in the big picture.

Rob Marrack placed Lily on the ground and she clung onto his hand like a lifeline as she tugged the big man toward Elise and Mary. For his part, Rob shrugged at Carol Van Cliff who smiled broadly.

Seconds later, Elise faced Jill’s father. He had coal like eyes in keeping with the rest of his features. He held out his hand and shook hers and then Mary’s hand. It amused Elise when she saw Mary’s cheeks flame red. She probably rarely encounters that kind of politeness.

“Hello, I’m Rob Marrack, and Jill’s my daughter.”

Elise took a few seconds to savour the man’s Cornish accent when he spoke her lover’s name. Full of love and pride. She wondered if her own father had ever spoken with that tone about her. It was something she was never likely to know—she never personally experienced it when he was alive. “Hello, Mr Marrack, I’m Elise Ridge and it’s a pleasure to meet you. This is Mary Collins, Lily’s nursemaid and friend.” Rob smiled and Elise’s heart jumped for a moment when she replaced Rob’s face with his daughter’s. Darn, I’m going to have to control that emotional response around here or he’ll think I’m flirting with him. I can just imagine the idiotic look I’m giving him.

“I’m not sure if Jill is going to stop by and check up on you.” Rob grinned. “She’s involved with preparations for a birthday party this afternoon,” He glanced at Lily clutching his hand.

Elise’s schooled her expression into what she considered polite interest. “That would be a pity. We were hoping she’d have lunch with us.”

“Maybe she will. My daughter is a very independent woman. On that note, I need to leave and help my friend who is stressing over all the preparations for lunch.
